The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has rocked manufacturers worldwide, impacting procurement and supply chain operations at an extraordinary level. While there is an unprecedented demand for certain products, manufacturers are themselves grappling with sluggish growth and diminished profitability. It's left most procurement teams asking, "How do we ensure we're better prepared next time?"

During the second quarter of 2020, we aligned closely with each of our large manufacturing clients across North America and Europe. If the customer operations were still running even in light of COVID-19, we were there to help figure out the best way to meet their needs, mostly related to safety and cleaning.

  • In the U.S., many plants that remained open were required to undergo extra precautions related to cleaning the facility and screening employees. When one of our largest automotive supply customers in indicated they needed support, DSSI got to work to put a national program in place for Level 1, 2, and 3 cleaning so that plants could get the service they needed within a couple hours, whether it was proactive sanitation or remediation cleaning. We also acted quickly to help plants source the tents and other equipment needed to effectively screen employees so they could focus on their operations.
  • In the EU, one of our customers in the Pharmaceutical/Food Production industry needed disposable gowns for its employees to return to essential work. Although this customer had primarily only utilized DSSI for MRO items in the past, they reached out when all their normal supply chains options were out of stock. Our Category Managers were able to identify a domestic company within days who had just recently begun manufacturing disposable gowns and get them shipped immediately.
  • In the U.S., another of our automotive supply customers called around to various distributors to obtain the bulk hand sanitizer needed for multiple plants. Feeling like the pricing was exorbitant, he called DSSI, and discovered that we were able to obtain the exact same product directly from the manufacturer with immediate availability at a 48% savings over what the distributors had quoted.

In all these instances and countless others, our data team maintained its commitment to its deep item master discipline by setting up the exact manufacturer name and part number for each item as well as the price paid. DSSI takes very seriously its role in providing customers the level of insight into their spend that leads to effective budgeting, strategic planning and, ultimately, sustainable cost savings.

If any of the situations above describe similar experiences you've had in 2020, we'd love to hear from you!
